Songs of Joe Hill
Bucky Halker
Revolting Records (2015)
Anywhere But Utah: Songs of Joe Hill features Bucky Halker performing the songs of martyred labor songwriter Joe Hill (1879-1915) and was released in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hill’s execution. Hill wrote some of the most well known labor protest songs in the US and his works have traveled around the world.
This recording includes classics like “The Preacher and the Slave,” “Rebel Girl,” and “The Tramp,” as well as lesser known songs and a few from the Swedish archives. Bucky was even able to locate and record a couple of Hill’s unknown, non-labor songs: “Come and Take a Ride in My Aeroplane” and “My Dreamland Girl.”
The included booklet contains extensive liner notes on Hill and each track, as well as lyrics and complete credits.
A host of musicians perform with Bucky on the album, including the St. Paul Male Swedish Choir, Jon Langford, Big Shoulders Brass Band, John Kattke, Sue Demel, Don Stiernberg, Andy Dee, Cathy Richardson, John Abbey, Lanialoha Lee-Sumberg, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, and many more.
