Description
1913-1919
Edited by J. Robert Constantine
University of Illinois Press
Eugene V. Debs’s journey from the Hoosier conservatism of his youth to the committed radicalism for which he is best remembered is chronicled in his extensive correspondence. Volume 2 covers Debs’s continuing efforts for the Socialist party in America, including his unsuccessful candidacy for Congress from his Indiana district. Debs’s famous antiwar speech made in protest of World War I led to his conviction for wartime espionage. This volume concludes with Debs’s letters from prison in Moundsville, West Virginia.
