Details

Both memoir and a text on radical theory, LeMar's book is a treatise on class struggle from the perspective of the (ex-)prisoner and the squatter. An excellent example of working-class scholarship, "The Deprived and the Depraved" switches effortlessly from tales of temp agency work to analysis of street violence under capitalism to squat life, weaving together a coherent look at radicalized lumpen life. LeMar doesn't just focus on the hardships and the ponderings - he also points readers to collective action. Discussing the need for organizing the most oppressed and exploited in society, he addresses housing struggles, prison abolition, labor organizing, and other forms of organized struggle as a means to reach the egalitarian possibilities he strives for.
