Quick Overview

To Fan the Flames of Discontent: The Living Songs of Joe Hill and the Wobblies by Jack Herranen & The Ninth Ward Conspiracy

From the Back of the CD:

This project was born at a kitchen table... one man, a guitar, and a conscience burning for justice. A friend dropped 'The Little Red Songbook' in my lap. I was familiar with Joe Hill, but did not yet grasp where he fit into the continuum of social revolution. I picked up my guitar, immediately struck by the timeless lyricism.

Lucy Parsons, Mother Jones, Eugene Debs, Big Bill Haywood stood together on the platform in a union hall in Chicago, on June 27th 1905 when the IWW was founded. Haywood spoke: 'Fellow workers... We are here to confederate the workers of this country into a working-class movemoent that shall have for its purpose the emancipation of the working-class from the slave bondage of capitalism'... and so it goes.

With free marked fundamentalism wreaking havoc around the corner and across the globe, it made perfect sense to reassemble a pantheon of revolutionaries and offer up a 'renunciation'. In the heat of the New Orleans summer of 2004, we gathered in the Ninth Ward Pickin' Parlor for what were blessed, haunted sessions. youmay hear a few missed notes, children's voices, and a thunderstorm. I rest assured knowing that Joe Hill would've wanted this recording to have a tinge of reckless imperfection... These are flawed times in our deeply flawed nation.

We conspired openly with the spirits... We want to reclaim the meaning of conspiracy here: if you trace it back to its Latin roots it means 'to breathe together'. That we did! Most of all we seek to add these reworked tunes to the sacred collective project of building a just and dignified present and a radical hope for the future...
